A few days ago, a major newspaper in Zagreb published the news that the Holy See was about to appoint an apostolic administrator for the parish of Medjugorje that would thus be detached from the Diocese of Mostar and be placed directly under a representative of the Pope.
This is not an impromptu notice but a decision that has been developing for some time and which so far, according to the newspaper report, has not been carried out, due to opposition from the bishop of Mostar. Insiders knew of the possible solution so the only news is the recent remark made by the director of the Vatican Press Office, Fr. Lombardi. His words do not deny that the possibility is being studied, even if its realization is not imminent. “In recent days,” Fr. Lombardi said, “there have been rumors regarding the possible appointment of an apostolic administrator for the Shrine of Medjugorje that would govern it and report directly to the Holy See. This option is one possibility among others being studied,” the director of the Vatican Press Office affirmed, “but there is still no decision on the matter. It is therefore premature to speak of it as a decision that has already been made or that is even imminent.”
Beyond the diplomatic language, it is clear that the Church’s intention is to take direct care of the Marian shrine of Medjugorje (as it does, for example, at the shrines at Loreto and San Giovanni Rotondo) because of the great fruit it already bears on an international level. Recognition of the apparitions is not on the agenda. Our Lady works over long periods of time. In the meantime, the Church takes under her wings all those who, from all over the world, respond to the call.
Yours truly, Father Livio
