Dear Friends, Prayers of petition are as old as the human race and are found in all religions, especially Christianity.
They stem from the awareness of the fragility of life on earth and the realization that we are not able to face the myriad of problems and disasters that beset us every day with only our own resources. Addressing God in prayer, we are expressing a certainty in the reality that only the Almighty is capable of helping us. Believers know, as the Queen of Peace tells us, that “God knows all, God sees all, and God loves”. The One who has created the world governs it with His almighty power of love.
“By His providence God protects and governs all things which He has made, ‘reaching mightily from one end of the earth to the other, and ordering all things well’ (Wis 8:1). For ‘all are open and laid bare to His eyes’ (Heb 4:13), even those things which are yet to come into existence through the free action of creatures” (CCC, 302). “St. Catherine of Siena said to ‘those who are scandalized and rebel against what happens to them’: ‘Everything comes from love, all is ordained for the salvation of man, God does nothing without this goal in mind’” (CCC, 313). “Faith gives us the certainty that God would not permit an evil if He did not cause a good to come from that very evil, by ways that we shall fully know only in eternal life” (CCC, 324).
Therefore, as Jesus teaches us in the Our Father, in all our needs, both spiritual and temporal, we must not be afraid to turn confidently to our heavenly Father who is ready to work miracles when He sees our faith. Through prayer we can stop wars and all kinds of disasters because, as the Queen of Peace tells us, prayer “works miracles in hearts and in the world”. As the Virgin of Kibeho revealed, God does not intervene with extraordinary actions, but through natural causes, “in ordinary, even if unusual, ways”.
Yours truly, Fr. Livio
