Radio Maria Hungary: Beatification of Hungarian Martyr János Brenner

IMG_9058

Fr. János Brenner, a victim of the retaliation that followed Hungary’s failed anti-Soviet uprising in 1956, was beatified at a ceremony attended by more than 15,000 people in his hometown of Szombathely, western Hungary, on Tuesday 1 May.

At the ceremony, Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Causes of Saints, read out a message from Pope Francis in which the pontiff approved Brenner’s beatification.

Addressing those present, Cardinal Péter Erdő, archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, said Brenner’s murder “was not just any kind of murder or an apparent accident”, but rather that he had become a martyr for the Eucharist.

The ceremony was transmitted by Radio Maria Hungary, which was also present at the beatification Mass with pilgrims and flags. Here you can see a short video with the beautiful Radio Maria flags during the ceremony.
