Radio Maria opens in Madagascar

RM Madagascar

Radio Maria began its broadcasting in Madagascar on 25th March this year, bringing the number of radios operating in Africa to nineteen. The technicians, on site, have worked very hard to ensure the opening on such an important date in the liturgical calendar that marks the Feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The office is located in the diocese of Ambositra, in the Southern-Central area of the island. It comprises an area of 24 thousand km² and almost half of the population are Catholics, with an increase in the number of new baptisms. There are fifty priests covering the twenty parishes in the entire diocese.

In relation to the population, this zone has a very high number of religious (both men and women) vocations: this explains why in Ambositra it is a source of great joy to have at least a son or a daughter fortunate enough to consecrate himself/herself to God.

In Madagascar, like in the rest of Africa, the Catholic religion is rooted in culture. In this area, given the political instability and a high level of poverty, Radio Maria contributes not only to the teaching of the Catholic faith, but also to the unity, reconciliation and  promotion of human welfare.

Father Philippe, the director of the radio station, and his staff, have been at work for some time to guarantee the listeners day-long programmes. The official inauguration is set for 28th April 2015. Radio Maria Madagascar is the second radio to open in the African continent thanks to the contribution of listeners from all over the world, joined in Mariathon, the race for solidarity, for the 2013-2014 biennial. Radio Maria Equatorial Guinea was opened on 8th December 2014, the day of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.

Thanks to the generosity of the money raised during Mariathon, Radio Maria will open shortly in the Republic of Guinea. The office, located in the capital Conakry, is ready and the equipment has arrived and cleared through customs. “The Ebola virus has caused considerable delays – declared Jean Paul Kayihura, the continental representative of World Family of Radio Maria in Africa – we hope that our technicians will soon be able to reach Conakry to complete the work, so that this country can also listen to the “voice” of Radio Maria and reach the goal of becoming the twentieth Radio Maria in Africa”.
